Summer Camp 2021

"Jesus' Humanity"

This curriculum is seeking to connect our campers with Jesus' humanity. We often times default to thinking of Jesus in terms of the divine, the miracles and such. While this is by no means bad, in fact is wholly necessary when understanding Jesus, we found it potentially helpful for our campers to spend some time digging into the humanity of Jesus. We are hoping to help campers connect with Jesus as someone who had similar experiences and emotions. Each of our lessons focuses on an experience or emotion that Jesus had and hopefully relates it to our campers own lives.

We have made the curriculum from our 2021 Summer Camp available to everyone. Below you find an synopsis of each lesson and a button to download each lesson.

Be The Church: Lesson Overview

Jesus is Born

Scripture: Luke 2:1-7, 41-48

Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another's suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. Compassion is not the same as empathy or altruism, though the concepts are related.

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. ... And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don't cry.” Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still.

Jesus is Baptized

Scripture: Mark 1:1-11

As revealed through the verses of Psalm 19 below, God continually speaks to us through every part of creation in ways that are ‘sweeter than dripping honey.’  In contrast, our culture has developed an appetite and admiration for clever biting language, especially retorts.  Given that bullying behavior are  on the rise, even in elementary school classrooms, it is critical that our children be given examples to follow and practice opportunities to ‘speak grace’ into their daily conversations (trusting that God’s grace draws us closer).

Jesus is Tempted

Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11

Paul establishes churches across the Mediterranean and he would keep in contact with them through letters.  After Paul left Corinth, the Christians there began to disagree.  1 Corinthians is Paul’s response to the church in Corinth which explains Paul’s understanding of God’s love as disclosed in Christ and the appropriate conduct for those who are in Christ.  Love is the only and ultimate enduring reality.

Jesus' Anger

Scripture: John 16:4-8, 12-15

In this lesson we talk about the fact that we believe in a God who not only loves us and knows us by name, but also shows us the truth and keeps promises. No matter what our faith journeys look like, no matter how we feel, no matter what happens along the way, we can know – truly know – that the Holy Spirit is always with us, guiding us as a friend, and showing us, all the time, just how much God loves us.
